Inspirational Women of Pembrokeshire

Today (8th March) is International Women’s Day 2019, a day dedicated to championing women and their incredible achievements. This year, we here at Coastal Cottages, decided to get involved with our own celebrations. All week, we’ve been honouring women from Pembrokeshire who we think are inspiring in some way. Before taking a look at our list, it’s important to remember that the word “inspiring” is one of those terms which means different things to different people. It’s a term which can be applied to any number of people and their achievements; what is inspiring to you might not be inspiring […]

Saint Non, Mother of Saint David

Friday 8th March is International Women’s Day and to join in with the celebrations, we’ve spent this week honouring Inspiring Women from Pembrokeshire. So far we’ve applauded Jemima Nicholas who fought in the Last Invasion of Britain; Bishop Joanna Penberthy who became the first female Bishop in Wales, Tania (and Jerry) Rees who have set up a plastic free store in Narberth and Lottie Chant, a local firefighter. Last up in the series, we bring you Saint Non. Possibly a controversial choice, but carry on reading and you’ll why we’re set to keep this one as a Pembrokeshire woman. The […]

Lottie Chant, Pembrokeshire Firefighter

This week we are celebrating Inspirational Women in Pembrokeshire, in honour of International Women’s Day this Friday (8th March). So far, we’ve commended Jemima Nicholas – a Fishguard heroine involved in the Last Invasion of Britain), Rt Revd Joanna Penberthy – the first female Bishop of St Davids, and Tania (and Jerry) Rees – founders of the plastic free Happy Planet Green Store in Narberth. Next up in the list comes a local female firefighter, Lottie Chant. I met with her on a rather miserable wet Wednesday afternoon, but her attitude couldn’t have been brighter. Based in Pembroke Dock, she is […]

Tania (and Jerry) Rees, Happy Planet Green Store

As part of our Inspirational Women of Pembrokeshire series, I reached out to Tania Rees at Happy Planet Green Store in Narberth. Tania, with her husband Jerry, founded one of Pembrokeshire’s very first plastic-free shops. Now some of you might wish to argue that this post also applauses Tania’s husband Jerry, and in a run of articles created with the aim of honouring some of Pembrokeshire’s most remarkable women – I can see why you might feel that way. Whilst some of the women featured in this series are praised for their solo feats, such as Jemima Nicholas who fought […]

Rt Revd Joanna Penberthy, Bishop of St Davids

Joining in with the 2019 celebrations of International Women’s Day, we’ve put together a series of posts honouring some of the most Inspirational Women of Pembrokeshire. The second in this series takes a look at Rt Revd Joanna Penberthy – the current Bishop of St Davids, and the first ever female Bishop in the Church of Wales. Similarly to our first Inspirational Woman, Jemima Nicholas who bravely battled against enemy soldiers in the Last Invasion of Britain; the Rt Revd Penberthy has become an important figure in Pembrokeshire history. She has become the very first woman in Wales to be […]

Jemima Nicholas, a Fishguard Heroine

If you listen to any stories or read any books about the Last Invasion of Britain which took place in Fishguard in 1797, you’re guaranteed to hear the name Jemima Nicholas at some point. Although there is some debate surrounding her involvement, there is no denying she has become an iconic character in Pembrokeshire history. In celebration of International Women’s Day 2019, I met with Julie Coggins from the Fishguard Invasion Centre Trust to find out more about Jemima, why she has become so iconic and what makes her such an inspirational Pembrokeshire figure. Quite coincidentally, our meeting took place […]

The Last Invasion of Britain, 1797

Often overshadowed by the Norman invasion of 1066 as the last substantial invasion of Britain, the real last invasion of Britain actually took place in February 1797 in the harbour-side town of Fishguard, West Wales. Many overlook this invasion due to the fact it was not successful and not very well organised. By the late 18th Century, the French Revolution was going strong and in 1797, a force of hundreds attempted an invasion of Britain. Led by Captain William Tate, the strategy was to sail through the Channel into Bristol and conquer the city. This English city was the second largest […]
