World Space Week 2017

From 4th October, people across the world will be celebrating World Space Week. The campaign, first founded in 1999, is run by the World Space Week Association (WSWA) and co-ordinated by the United Nations which helps spread it across the world. In its run of 17 years, World Space Week has become the world’s largest annual space event.

The aim of World Space Week is simple; to excite and educate people from all ends of the earth about the benefits we can receive from space.

“The General Assembly declares 4 to 10 October World Space Week to celebrate each year at the international level the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition”

UN General Assembly resolution, 6 December 1999

World Space Week begins on the 4th October every year; in celebration of the anniversary of the very first launch of a man-made earth satellite which occurred on this day in 1957. The theme for this year is “Exploring New Worlds in Space”; a theme which aims to inspire people and particularly the next generation that there are still incredible discoveries to be made in space. This theme creates opportunities for people to extend their knowledge of space, its benefits to humans and also to raise questions about future plans for space exploration.

So why not get involved and plan your own exploration of space?
