On Wednesday 28th November, Friends of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park are inviting you to Haverfordwest Leisure Centre for an evening with RSPB Warden, Lisa Morgan. This event takes place from 7pm and will see Lisa share her unique first-hand experiences on the islands giving a wonderful insight into the day-to-day running of the reserves.
Over the course of the evening, you will learn about the different species of wildlife on both islands and their habitats. Lisa’s responsibilities include conserving these habitats so that the wildlife can thrive and maintaining groundwork such as paths, fences and hides. The versatile position allows her to also pay close attention to the wildlife on each island by conducting breeding bird surveys and observing the bird populations as well as working alongside contractors and volunteers in her work overseeing the islands.
Ramsey Island, located off the coast of the St Davids peninsula, is a favourite for visitors to the area hoping to spot a seal pup or two. Come September, the island is awash with breeding Atlantic grey seals and their adorable pups. As well as seabirds such as guillemots and manx shearwaters, Welsh mountain ponies and sheep call Ramsey their home and the island is even a dedicated Special Protection Area for endangered species like choughs.
Grassholm Island is one of the RSPB’s oldest reserves and is located further off the coast than any of the other Pembrokeshire islands. If you immediately envision gannets when Grassolm is mentioned, it’s no wonder. This island is home to a colony of nearly 40,000 pairs of gannets; a number which makes up approximately one tenth of the gannet population. If you pay a visit to this island awash with white birds, you might also spot a porpoise or a dolphin who have popped by for a feed.
If you’re interested in arranging a visit to either of these islands, take a look at the Activities and Experiences pages on our website where you can book a boat trip to one of the islands off the Pembrokeshire coast. Trips do not run through the winter months but if you’re planning a trip to the area next year, ask our Concierge Team to check availability for you. We have dog friendly trips, child friendly trips, exhilarating trips around the island and you can even land on Ramsey and have a chance to see the wildlife up close.
