Cilhendre, a charming Welsh cottage positioned down a side street in central Newport, is a great choice as a base for getaways in North Pembrokeshire. Accommodating up to 8 with 2 dogs, this holiday home is perfect for family trips and activity breaks with Newport Sands Beach, the Coast Path and various attractions nearby as well as the town’s shops, restaurants and pubs.
Built of stone from the nearby castle around the 17th Century, this property was extended in the 19th Century into a pub but now stands as a traditional holiday home - deceptively spacious and bursting with original features. Picture wooden floors, ceiling beams, comfortable sofas, antique furnishings and a warming wood burner in the lounge. Cilhendre is excellently equipped with a kitchen Rayburn and a ground-floor ensuite double bedroom.
To the rear, French doors from the breakfast room opens onto a sunny secluded patio. The outside space is then completed with a lawn - easily the most popular spot in the cottage during the summer holidays, especially favoured by children and pets. Once home to Welsh author, Menna Gallie, you can see why the pretty location here might have inspired her creativity.
As for activities on offer nearby, the list is extensive with something for everyone. Newport Links Golf Course offers 18 holes with beautiful sea views over Newport Sands, which is the go-to beach for surfing and kitesurfing. Newport Parrog Beach is best for boating with canoeists and kayakers flocking here to paddle out along the coast. Children will enjoy days out at Castell Henllys nearby to experience Iron Age life at this replicated fort.
Walkers will be in their element with a stay at Cilhendre and the options nearby are plenty. Ramble the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to tour Dinas Island and the River Nevern where you might sight rare birds, hike to the top of Carn Ingli for 360-degree coastline views or stroll under a canopy of leaves at Ty Canol Woods, home to Pentre Ifan.

One car parking space directly outside cottage on level concrete pathway. Main entrance of Cilhendre is accessed by one step about 8 inches high. An alternative entrance is through French doors about 1.5 metres wide which is level with the floor. This gives access down the garden path to an iron gate at the rear of the property. It would be necessary to go down about 12 -14 steps to this car park, no hand rail. In the garden, there is level concrete path and slightly raised ledge leading to the large, paved terrace where there are garden chairs and table. Ground floor facilities provide a comfortable lounge with Smart remote control TV. There is also a large kitchen opening to the breakfast room all on one level. Also, there is a bedroom with ensuite facilities reached by a 9 inch step. Breakfast room leads on to the garden. The kitchen has extensive worktops and units and a low level oven. The living room is well lit with artificial light and the breakfast room is very bright with skylights and French doors. Guide dogs welcome. A dog leg wooden staircase leads to the first floor landing which provides excess to the bathroom and three bedrooms.

We have enjoyed another idyllic holiday in wonderful Cilhendre -It is such a marvellous house for families, situated in one of the most beautiful places in the world!! All fourteen members of the Thomas family have been here over some part of the holiday and none of us has wanted to leave!! The crowning glory has been the three weeks of glorious sunshine! Thank you very much again from us all .
Plenty of space for our family of 6 adults to enjoy themselves. We really appreciated the games and books provided. Excellent local produce from the butcher and fish shop. Coastal path walks were amazing. Ran out of time for all the things we wanted to do.
Lovely old cottage plenty of everything, weather dry, sunny but very cold, fab for walks. Local pubs friendly and good food, suited the needs of our large family who vary in ages. Would love to come back in the summer to enjoy beautiful garden and surrounding beaches. Maybe one day.
Enjoyed our stay in very comfortable cottage. The weather has been perfect for the few days that we have been here. Lovely walk from Pwllgwaelod to Cwm Yr Eglws via the coastal path. Also walked from Aberieddy to Porthgain beautiful walk, good lunch in Sloop Inn. Parrog is very pretty too, Lovely meal in Golden Lion. We hope to return.
The cottage was excellent, Very well equipped, comfortable beds, very well maintained and pretty garden. Great weather and we very much hope the chance will come for us to stay again. Well done the owners for providing such a high quality holiday cottage at a very reasonable price
The cottage is lovely, just what was needed for the 8 of us! Warm, Cosy and well equipped. 'The Shed' at Porthgain was superb. Enjoyed our stay very much, cooking on the rayburn was great fun. I'm sure we shall be back. Thank you.
The cottage has more to recommend it each time we come - congratulations and many thanks again for the personal touch awaiting us when we arrived. The weather has been lovely all week but sadly only 1 dogfish caught! Thank you for everything.
Two families from Cardiff, we came for a short break and had a lovely time. This is the first time in Newport and we all thought it was a lovely place and would like to come again in the summer. Explored the area on foot, it's ideal for everything and plenty of shops and eating places to keep us going. The cottage is great, very well equipped and comfortable and cosy - we enjoyed cooking on the Rayburn.
Arrived at 3.15 from Somerset, first time here! First impressions lovely layout, comfy, spacious and charming, Can't wait until tomorrow. Enjoyed our few days, very comfortable a home from home. Will be coming back.
Having arrived on a brilliantly sunny day, 26th August, I have seen some wonderful weather and have swum in the sea a few times, though not always out of choice. But a very good time. The beds were comfy, the tea was hot and the chef upped the meals from girl sized to boy sized keeping us very happy. Enjoyed the stay, the company was well behaved most of the time.
We came for a weeks R&R and did exactly what it says on the can. lovely cottage in a stunning location. It rained but that did not distract at all from the peaceful holiday. Would like to return next year.
We can only agree with the Latimers (May 07). Lovely family home, keep up the good, very good work!!!
The other half of the party (Derek Evans-Welsh) - we don't wish to complain but the sun was much too hot all week - we just don't expect this in Wales. Also we had no bites - my husband is a fisherman and this was very distressing for him! On a serious note, we've been coming to Wales since the children were little & this is by far the nicest accommodation we've stayed in - keep up the good work.
Congratulations it makes my stay very enjoyable - your project is excellent. The weather for the full week has been sunny - sunny - sunny. The cottage for me is a high standard, very comfortable, spacious, well done. The bird life seems to be slow - the walks as ever excellent. Pembrokeshire to me, I love it. Will keep on returning. Thank you all!
Lovely holiday, fantastic weather. Aga - Fab! Going home with a tan! Golden Lion grub really good, try the Sloop Inn, Porthgain aswell. Beaches this holiday, Druidstone Haven and Barafundle, beautiful! Warm and comfy cottage with good local dog walks.
Excellent weekend stay, house quaint , comfortable and old - the same as guests! Excellent stay "be happy" (the fish!) Lovely house, friendly & homely. Enjoyed our stay!
Nice to be back in this cosy cottage, if only it hadn't been raining the whole time. Everything working and sat everynight around a gorgeous woodburner. Most comfortable!
We are sorry to be leaving this cottage, it has such a lovely homely atmosphere and we immediately relaxed into holiday mode when we arrived here. This is our first family holiday in Newport and we have all thoroughly enjoyed being so close to all that the place has to offer - we will be back!
Another lovely holiday in Newport and the sun shone all week. It is my second stay in this house and the transformation of the garden is simply amazing! The new owners must have worked very hard indeed to clear and open it up. I look forward to seeing the re-decoration as I shall be returning again.
