Beaches near Secret Water

Broad Haven
Broad Haven (west) is a large, magnificent area of sand, which runs the entire length of Broad Haven Village and is a regular Blue Flag award winner. It is a favourite with both bathers and water sports enthusiasts and is ideally facilitated with pubs, shops, restaurant, cafe etc.
Broad Haven's westerly facing sands offer excellent conditions for kite-surfing, kite-buggying, walking and sandcastle building.
It’s not hard to see why this beach is one of the most popular windsurfing beaches in this area and home to Haven Sports water sports shop. There is a car park at the southern end of the beach opposite Haven Sports and a larger car park a small distance from the beach at the North End of the bay.

Little Haven
Little Haven is a picturesque old fishing village with steep streets that descend to a sandy beach with a slipway for small boats, including the local inshore rescue boat. The beach itself is popular with swimmers, divers and kayaks in the summer months. At low tide you can walk along the beach to Broad Haven, passing Settlands on the way, there are numerous caves and rock pools to explore however Settlands is only accessible at low tide so be careful not to get cut off here.
Broad Haven
Druidstone Haven can be found by following the winding coastal road between Nolton Haven and Broad Haven. It is a well hidden, long and sandy beach, enclosed on three sides by spectacular cliffs. Access to the beach is by two fairly steep footpaths. There are no amenities on the beach, but the nearby Druidstone Hotel has a good menu and a lovely outdoor seating area, providing the most glorious views of the beach and as far out to sea as the eye can see.
There is only limited parking on the side of the coastal road, but it is also possible to stop here on the Puffin Shuttle Bus.
The cove of Nolton Haven is a small inlet of pebbles and sand. At low tide it's revealed to be a long and narrow beach, perfectly suited to sunbathers, as it has the added advantage of being sheltered by high cliffs on either side. With the car park behind the beach, Nolton Haven is a good starting point for excellent cliff-top walks along parts of the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path, finished off with lunch in the Mariners Arms!
St Ishmaels
A large expanse of subtly coloured sand is revealed at this estuary when the tide retreats. Suitable for bathing, although swift currents do arise at some stages of the tide. There are many rock pools for youngsters to explore as well as the stream and stepping stones on the western side - care needed when tide is coming in. There is a free car park on the grass which is adjacent to the footpath.
This lovely and secluded beach is also open to dogs all year around.
St Ishmaels
Lindsway Bay is a sandy cove situated less than 1 mile from St Ishmaels. It is a lovely bathing spot for families, along with being popular with surfers. The nearest parking is in St Ishmaels village by the sports field. From here take the footpath along the west side of the field to the coast path, follow the coast path for approx 200 yards eastwards. Access to the beach is then down a steep zig-zag path with stone and concrete steps. At the bottom it is a short walk over the sandstone boulders to reach the sand. Once you get to the sand, you'll know it was worth the little stroll!
Newgale
Newgale provides the ideal location for watersports. There is always plenty of space on the long, two mile stretch of flat sand and whilst the Atlantic Ocean rollers ensure some exciting surf, it is an ideal beach for the young and not so expert. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards during the school holidays. There is a cafe at both ends of the beach, the Duke of Edinburgh Inn is located on the seafront and there are regular visits by the ice cream van in the summer.
West Angle bay is a picturesque, sandy beach which overlooks Thorn Island, and is met by The Pembrokeshire Coastal Path from both sides. Angle offers the enthusiastic tourist a never ending list of activities, from walking The Coast Path, to swimming in the sea and exploring the hidden castles!
Freshwater West is a huge sandy beach backed by sand dunes and has a rocky reef at the southern end of the beach. It is a haven for surfers, who are drawn to the area by the big Atlantic rollers, so it seems only natural that the beach should be the setting for the Welsh National Surfing Championships. The water here is in pristine condition and home to many species of bird life, seals and fish. However please note, it can be dangerous to swimmers because of strong undertows and hazardous quicksands, so families with young children should be on their guard. In the main season there are lifeguards patrolling the beach.
There is a large car park above the beach with W/C. Look out for Cafe mor parked here too- an award winning food outlet with a menu focused around local seafood dishes. Cafe Mor is available from Easter until the end of the summer season.
Freshwater West has featured in two huge films over the not so distant past - Ridley Scott's Robin Hood and also Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where it was used as the back drop for Dobby's Shell Cottage.
This lovely Pembrokeshire beach is also dog friendly all year around.
Freshwater East
Freshwater East is a wide bay of golden sand and blue water backed by dunes and grassy headlands, there is a freshwater stream running through the beach to the sea at the Southern end. Popular with boat owners, divers, fishermen and surfers alike, it has a shop, pub, caravan park and toilets - all set behind the dunes. .

Historic Places near Secret Water

Originally constructed in the 12th Century as a fortress made from timber, and has seen visits from a number of famous names including Oliver Cromwell and King Richard II. The castle was later reconstructed in stone, and was often used to house prisoners before being replaced by a new prison building inside the castle grounds in the 19th Century. This building is now home to the Pembrokeshire Records Office. Not much remains of the stone castle other than the stone wall which grandly looks upon the small town below it. A must-visit is the Town Museum, located in the Old Prison Governor's House. With artefacts, prints, paintings and models, this museum tells the history of the castle and the surrounding town.
Built in the 13th Century, this castle is half fortified manor house and half fully developed medieval castle surrounded by forty acres of land and gardens. The castle and gardens is closed over the winter months for essential maintenance but is open for special occasions. Please Note: Dogs must be kept on leads at all times.
Scolton Manor was built in 1842 as a family home, and was even used as a hospital during World War 2. It is now a Victorian Manor House and Museum, set in a luxurious 60 acres of country park and woodland, with a wide variety of wildlife. The park is open all year, whilst the Manor House is closed during the winter months. The Manor House will be opening again in March 2015, and times will be confirmed nearer the time. Please Note: Admission to the Park is free, whilst charges to the Manor House apply. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times, and are allowed in the Park only.
Pembrokeshire Motor Museum has over forty motor cars on display, from veteran cars to classic cars. For each car on display, you can see a complete history. All cars are in excellent condition and are occasionally used by their owners for vintage car rallies etc. so please bear in mind that cars may not always be on display. The Motor Museum is also home to a licensed bar, a magazine and video lounge where you can read and watch all about motoring.
Pembroke Dock's Flying Boat Centre is unique to the UK. Learn about the RAF Pembroke Dock, the worlds largest flying boat station and the famous Sunderland and Battle of the Atlantic.
Milford Haven
The Museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Milford Haven. The Museum collection reflects all of these aspects of the town's history, but focuses particularly on the maritime history. The Museum is a voluntarily run museum.
Narberth
Llawhaden is a 12th Century fortified Bishop's Palace, which was first built as a ringwork castle. If visiting, make sure to check out the ruined chapel of Llawhaden Hospital nearby. Entry is free. Please Note: Dogs must be kept on leads at all times.
Pembroke
Built in 1093 with timber, before being rebuilt in 1189 with a stone structure, this castle is ovular in shape and surrounded by a mill pond. This castle has a gated house with a circulated keep, and has been extensively restored. Please Note: Dogs must be kept on leads.
Carew Cheriton control tower museum, restored to original state as part of a community project. A lasting memorial to all who served on the airfield through two world wars. The airmen who main the supreme sacrifice during those years. A structure for educational use focused on school and group visits who are studying this period of modern day history. A tourist attraction offering a wartime experience.

Built in timber around 1100 by Gerald of Windsor, this now-ruined stone castle is a very popular historic attraction. The walk around the Castle and Tidal Mill is particularly popular with dog owners. The walk is a great free attraction, however there are admission charges upon entry to the castle. Carew Castle often hosts special events throughout the year, see their website for more information.

Please Note: Well behaved dogs are welcome inside the castle providing they are kept on a short lead.

Customer Reviews of Secret Water

The Waldons and Cox's

Here we are, packing up to go home after a great weeks holiday with grand children. They have had a whale of a time, with tree houses, rope swings, canoes, quad bikes all thanks to Tess and Paul. The grand parents joined in as well as relaxing where possible. Even I enjoyed the canoeing!! The house is in a perfect setting, stunning views, surrounded by cows, sheep and bees!! We have enjoyed the lovely walks, local sights and a couple of the beautiful beaches. We will be back!! Thanks again. Great cycling country with the wind and hills either making to harder or faster! All the better to enjoy a hearty Laverbread breakfast on the return. No swell unfortunately on this tour but plenty else to keep the family occupied. Thank you Paul and Tess for sharing this secret place with us. We will be back. We all had a great time like going on, the canoes and tree climbing, and all so the smelly cows. The children had a lot of fun with Molly and the quad bike.

Paul, Vicky, Molly and Petal

Thank you for a wonderful stay, Paul Tess and family are the perfect hosts. This gem of a place had everything you could ask for. We all enjoyed the tree house and swings and walks down to the river where we built a small fire and toasted Marshmallows, the Canoes are on offer to explore the beautiful stretch of river, which if you ask Paul, has lots and lots of history of Welsh trade. The house is super warm and comfortable. Unfortunately we were only here for a week, but we will definitely be back. Paul and Tessa's hospitality make sure of that and we are so lucky to have amazing relaxing part of the world as they have. They truly and genuinely want to share what they have with others, if it were me I'd be selfish and keep it for myself. Paul and Tess thank you for your kindness and please pop in and see us next time your in Pontypridd. All the best Paul and family.
