Five Great Places to Spend Mother’s Day in Pembrokeshire
Celebrate everything your mum does for you by spending the day together
Mother’s Day is an important date in the diary for most, as it’s a great opportunity to show your mum just how much you appreciate everything she does. This year that date is Sunday 22nd March 2020. If you are staying in one of our Pembrokeshire holiday cottages this Mother’s Day, why not swap out the traditional gift ideas in favour of some quality time together?
Give the gift of a thoughtful experience you can do together instead and you’ll both take away memories to last a lifetime. Here are five fantastic places to spend Mother’s Day in Pembrokeshire this year.
The National Botanic Garden of Wales near Carmarthen is known for hosting fantastic events all year round including Antiques Fairs, Photography Courses and Doggy Days to name a few. Make sure to keep an eye on their online events calendar each year if you’re ever in need of an idea for a family day out.
To honour Mother’s Day, the National Botanic Garden is offering free entry to all mums this year and will be hosting a special Mother’s Day Fair too. The Fair will be made up of food and crafts with local produce and handmade jewellery available to purchase. Taking place in The Great Glasshouse, you’ll be able to browse the stalls as you stroll through one of the Garden’s most iconic nature locations. The National Botanic Garden of Wales is spread across 560 acres of Welsh land and has over 8000 plant types to see.
Enjoy live music at the National Botanic Garden of Wales
The gifts don’t stop there though; the first 100 mums through the door on 22nd March will also receive a complimentary present with items from some of the exhibitors at the Fair. You can also expect live performances throughout the day from the Rock Choir and musician Shelley Fairplay, and of course will have access to all the gardens.
Also located within the National Botanic Garden of Wales is The British Bird of Prey Centre, which is also giving free entry to mums on Mother’s Day. Here you can see a range of birds including Barn Owls, Golden Eagles, Merlin Falcons, White-Tailed Sea Eagles and Honey Buzzards to name a few. See flying displays or learn about the important conservation work this centre does to help reintroduce select birds which are low in numbers.
Book a table at The Cove in Tenby for a stylish yet relaxing Mother’s Day celebration this year. A contemporary bar nestled on one of Tenby’s cobbled streets just minutes from the charming bustling harbour, The Cove is the place to go for mouth-watering food and sophisticated drinks. If you’re staying in or around Tenby this Mother’s Day, calling in is a must.
On Mother’s Day itself, you can book a table for their Mother’s Day Sunday Lunch. Whether it's just you and your mum or a larger group, you can tuck into their incredible sharing plates or even order a roast platter – either way you’re sure not to be disappointed. Pair your meal with a great bottle of wine or spoil yourselves with a bottle of bubbly!
Alternatively, call in for an afternoon tea one day, or as The Cove like to call it, a G & Afternoon Tea. If your mum is partial to a gin-tasting, you’ll definitely want to take the opportunity to book afternoon tea here. Choose three options from their impressive gin and tonic menus to enjoy, alongside a tea of finger sandwiches and freshly made cakes.
A visit to Tenby’s The Cove is not complete without a cocktail. One visit to their Instagram page and you’ll be wanting to book a table immediately. Order a classic martini, a refreshing mojito or a fruity concoction and raise a glass to honour your mum. You can even arrange a Cocktail Masterclass for groups of 6+.
If exploring the plants at the National Botanic Garden of Wales sounds great but you’d rather get a little more hands-on, head to the National Trust Stackpole Estate in South Pembrokeshire for an afternoon of flower arranging with your mum. This one is a great option for those of you celebrating Mother’s Day a little early, as it takes place the week before Mothering Sunday on 15th March.
From 2 pm, you can attend a fun workshop and learn the art of flower arranging – a wonderful idea if you’re looking for something new to do together. Spend a joyful afternoon helping each other with your floral arrangements, before taking them home to brighten up your dining table. Even if your mum can’t make this date, she is sure to appreciate your handmade bouquet as a heart-warming gift.
Once your workshop is complete, you can sit back and admire your arrangements whilst tucking into a delicious afternoon tea. Complete with fresh sandwiches and homemade cakes, this Afternoon Tea even comes complete with a glass of Prosecco – for the over 18’s only of course!
Booking in advance is recommended, please see the Stackpole Estate website for full booking details.
Hidden in the wooded area of The Rhos on the outskirts of Haverfordwest, you will find a magnificent 13th Century Castle and stunning 40-acre grounds at Picton Castle. A recommended day out for any season, a visit to this remarkable stately home on Mother’s Day might even make your mum feel like royalty this year.
With a history dating back around 800 years, Picton Castle is ideal for a more restful Mother’s Day celebration. Tickets to the Mothering Sunday event includes entry to the wonderful gardens where you can stroll through the Walled Garden and take a picture together at the water fountain, wander through ancient trees in the woodland walks, take a seat on the pergola in the serene Mediterranean Garden and spot wildlife at the pond. Little ones can even spend an hour or two playing in the Adventure Playground.
Your ticket also allows you entry to The Welsh Owl Garden in the bluebell woods where you will find over 25 different bird species, plus you can enjoy a scrumptious afternoon tea at Maria’s Courtyard Restaurant. Call into the shop and deli where you can buy a range of goodies, just perfect for the journey home! To top it all off, every mum who pays a visit to Mothering Sunday at Picton Castle will receive a free gift.
Booking in advance is essential, see the event website for more information on how to book.
