Penally Beach

A wide sandy bay perfect for family beach days and daily dog walks

Penally Beach is located at the western end of Tenby South Beach, a 2 mile stretch of sand just a short walk from the village at Penally. This soft sandy beach is sheltered by the headland and has direct access to the coastal path heading west towards Lydstep and Manorbier.

The beach is backed by dunes, at the back of which is where you will find Tenby Golf Course, an 18 hole course with spectacular views out over Carmarthen Bay. It is ideal for families with plenty of soft golden sand for sunbathing and tends to be a lot quieter than the nearby Tenby beaches. At low tide, there is a rocky section in some parts leading down to the sea.

Activities

Penally Beach is ideal for sunbathing with soft golden sand and a sheltered location. Most days during the warmer months, you'll find swimmers and families bodyboarding whilst there are plenty of opportunities for rock pooling along the bottom of the headland too.

The stunning views out over Caldey Island make it an idyllic place to relax and unwind, watching the boats crossing the bay to the island. As there are no facilities on the beach, most visitors bring along a picnics or fire up their mobile barbecues. Just be careful not to damage the landscape (the dunes in particular) when discarding your used barbecue/charcoal.

Exploring the headland is a favourite from this location. From the beach, you can take the path up onto the headland at Giltar Point, a popular viewing spot where you have spectacular views over the beach towards Tenby and out towards Caldey Island. The coast path meanders along to Lydstep Beach where you will find a secluded bay and holiday park.

Penally Beach in Pembrokeshire

Facilities

During the summer months, ice-cream vans operate along the beach from Tenby at low tide. The nearest shop is located in Penally village, which sits across the road from the train station and is well stocked (through the farmyard opposite the car park approx. 100yds on the right).

Local Top Tips

Penally Beach is ideal for picnics as there are no shops or cafes in the immediate vicinity. The car park for the beach is quite small and can fill quickly in the summer months.

Access

The beach is directly accessed via the car park at Penally station on the A4139. The car park, which is open Monday to Sunday, is currently free of charge and has public toilet facilities. From the car park, follow the path which takes you across the train track and winds through the dunes and golf course to the beach.

The path does get quite sandy close to the beach so is not suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs may need to be carried.

Dog Friendly

Penally Beach is dog friendly all year round. At low tide, there is a wide expanse of sand perfect for ball games and you can always venture up onto the headland for a good walk along the coastal path.

Awards

Penally sits at the far end of Tenby South Beach (which has a Blue Flag award itself) and has both a Seaside and Green Coast Award.
