Lamphey is a small and peaceful village that is set in between both the striking sandy beach village of Freshwater East and the riverside town of Pembroke. The main attraction in Lamphey is the ruined palace of medieval Bishops who once used it as a retreat.
For those who enjoy history, Lamphey has a well-maintained ruin of a wonderful 13th century palace, which was once a retreat for Bishops. The palace has since been acquired by and restored by CADW, the Welsh historic buildings agency.
It has been discovered that Lamphey Palace was once a place of remarkable levels of self-sufficiency, with large fishponds, a windmill, orchards, herb and vegetable areas along with extensive parklands full of livestock. The neighbouring medieval church is also worth a visit, it retains its medieval form and its fine 14th/15th century tower.
Lamphey has a well stock Spar shop and a fuel filling station, ideal for a quick stock up on the way to the beach.
For excellent home-made food and a warm welcome the Dial Inn is a must. Named after a sundial, it became an inn in 1966 and is an ever popular stop for walkers, cyclists, farmers and families.
The Dial is set in the village of Lamphey, just 2 miles from Pembroke. A very traditional spacious pub offering home-made lunch, dinner and Sunday lunches with home-made desserts. Kids snack box and children menus available. With Open fire in the bar area, a pool table and games room for the children to play. Small seating area in the beer garden at the back of the pub.
They serving a wide selection of real ales, wines and spirits.
Once a retreat for medieval bishop's seeking a tranquil surrounding away from the Church, Lamphey Bishop's Palace has been extremely well preserved despite dating back centuries. The Western Hall, Inner Gatehouse and the 82 foot long Great Hall are still an impressive sight to see.
