Cwm Gwaun Fishguard: A Pembrokeshire Dog Walk

Enjoy sea and valley views along this riverside stroll

Fishguard harbour views

This short Pembrokeshire dog walk is perfect for admiring fantastic river and sea views, incorporating woodland walks and an abundance of birdlife.

The views from Fishguard Harbour are truly idyllic so it is recommended to spend a little time here before heading off on your walk. It's so pretty that it has even previously attracted Hollywood stars like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor during the filming of Under Milk Wood (1971).

Note, this walk is often known to be rather wet and muddy so ensure you bring your wellies or walking boots and a towel or mat to lay down in the car before letting your pooch get their muddy paws in your seats.

The Route

After admiring the breathtaking sea views from your starting point at Fishguard Harbour Car Park, walk towards the Lower Town Bridge. Cross the bridge turning left onto a lane, making sure you take care upon crossing the A487, as this is a particularly busy road.

Follow this lane alongside the picturesque flowing river where the trail narrows and becomes muddy. Cross the stream here to be greeted with woodland and keep walking along this path. Pass by a ruined building to proceed uphill, making sure to keep the stone wall on your left.

This path soon strays from the riverside and offers some fantastic vantage points. Here you can capture beautiful views down the valley towards Lower Fishguard. You will meet the river once more, rising alongside it upon a ‘river terrace’. As you descend towards the river again, you'll pass by a second building in ruins and meet back with the river.

The best part of this short walk is that you get to see it all over again, as you have to turn on your heels and head back the same way you came if you want to make it back to your car.

Route Distance

This Pembrokeshire dog walk is approximately 2.2 miles in length.

Facilities

There are plenty of amenities in the town of Fishguard. Closest to the start/end points of this walk are the Cafe On The Quay and The Ship Inn. Venture up the hill to the town centre for further pubs, cafes and convenience stores along with public toilets and supermarkets.

Whilst you are in the area, you might also wish to visit The Last Invasion Tapestry Gallery to learn all about the last invasion on Britain which took place here in 1797. The French unsuccessfully attempted an invasion and were held captive at St Mary's Church, before a peace treaty was signed in The Royal Oak. You can also visit Fishguard Fort upon the hill to sightsee the old canon defence point where the elevated views across the harbour below are truly magnificent.

How to find it

From Fishguard town centre, follow the main road down Tower Hill towards Newport. You'll find the starting point of the Harbour Car Park at the bottom of the hill in Lower Town Fishguard.

Parking

Ample parking is available down at the Lower Town Harbour Car Park in Fishguard.
