Holidaying With your Dog

Everything you need to know about dog friendly holidays in Pembrokeshire

Holidays with your dog

No holiday feels complete without your four-legged friend and that’s why at Coastal Cottages, we offer pet-friendly accommodation at a wide range of our holiday cottages. With fantastic coastal and countryside locations across Pembrokeshire, you and your pooch will be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing your next getaway.

Dog Friendly Places

Pembrokeshire has a vast selection of truly spectacular beaches, coastal walks, and interesting heritage sites in and around the county. With over 50 beaches from small secluded coves to wide expanses of golden sand, we’re happy to provide you with a comfortable and cosy base for you to return to once you’ve finished exploring this stunning part of Wales. Below we’ve outlined our favourite things to do in Pembrokeshire that are all dog-friendly.

Beaches

All of our stunning beaches are great for stretching your legs, especially during the quieter autumn and winter months. However, some beaches do have dog restrictions for parts of the year which begins May 1st and ends September 30th. It’s worth checking before you book your holiday.

In the South of Pembrokeshire, you have Tenby which is home to four beautiful beaches. However, from the beginning of May until the end of September, dogs are not permitted at North Beach or Harbour Beach. Luckily Castle Beach allows dogs on the lead but only on a small part. So, it may be worth heading over to Penally Beach, which is on the opposite side of South Beach and welcomes dogs all year round. It is a sand and shingle beach with dunes on either side, so your pooch will have a fantastic time there. There’s also a coastal route that extends about 2 miles from this beach over to Lydstep. This trail offers breathtaking views and is perfect to give your dog some exercise.

Another popular option in the South is Saundersfoot, a wonderful seaside community with a stunning sandy beach that does enforce the dog ban. Although, there’s The Glen Beach which is on the opposite side of the harbour, is dog friendly all year round. It has cliffs on either side and rock pools for your dog to happily explore while you enjoy the spectacular views on the relaxing walk along the beach.

If you’re wanting to venture to West Pembrokeshire then a visit to Newgale Beach is a must! This beach is dog friendly all year round but there is a partial restriction ban for a middle section of the beach so just be aware that during the summer months, you cannot walk your dog the full length of the beach. Alternatively, there’s Abercastle Harbour Beach centred in a small idyllic village nestled on the northwest coast which is completely dog friendly all year round.

Days Out

If your dog will remain still on a boat for the entire 20-minute voyage to Caldey Island, it will be a terrific day out with the dog. The Cistercian monks reside on Caldey Island, where they produce chocolate and perfume that make wonderful gifts for the family back home.

Both Pembroke Castle and Carew Castle are dog friendly attractions. Well-behaved dogs on short leads are welcome all year round. A walk around the Mill pond next to Carew Castle makes for a stunning walk and picnic spot.

A great day out with the family that your dog can tag along on is a trip to Llys y Fran Reservoir. The dog must be kept on a leash when walking on the six kilometres of trails around the lake. It’s perfect for exploring, and there’s plenty of activities to enjoy.

The country is home to several forests like Minwear and Canaston Woods where your dog can be let off the lead to roam free and explore.

Foodies

St Govans Country Inn near to Bosheston Lily Ponds serves home cooked traditional foods and will allow dogs within a certain area of the pub. The Swan in Little Haven overlooking the beach accepts dogs as does The Harbour Inn at Solva. Further north in Porthgain there’s the Sloop Inn which is dog friendly outside and has the added benefit of quick service.

The Butternut in Saundersfoot is a popular little dog friendly cafe that is conveniently located in the centre of the village, just a stone's throw away from the beach. Or there’s Tap and Tan just off Tenby’s cobbled Frog Street which also accepts dogs and will even give them a treat to make them feel welcome!
