Nevern Riverside: A Pembrokeshire Dog Walk

Pretty countryside views and remarkable historic sights

Nevern

On this Pembrokeshire dog walk, you'll explore rather a hidden gem of the region with a stroll along the Nevern riverside in North Pembrokeshire. This delightful walk is ideal for those holidaying in the northern region or for those who like to get firmly off the beaten path.

This 3-mile circular ramble is a pleasant journey, starting at the church of St Brynach in Nevern with its fascinating history and passing through an abundance of unspoilt countryside following neat woodland and riverside paths.

Deep in rural Pembrokeshire near Newport, the church at Nevern dates back to around 1400 and lies just down the road from the ruins of Nevern Castle. Make sure to sightsee the grounds of the chapel even if you don't step inside, as you'll find interesting Ogham stones dating back centuries. One of the ancient yew trees within the churchyard grounds is quite a phenomenon. Known as 'The Bleeding Yew', you'll find that a blood-red sap oozes out of a broken branch making for quite a spectacle. Legend says that it will continue to do so until a Welshman re-occupies the castle on the hill above.

A top pitstop in the area is The Trewern Arms. You'll pass by this charming country inn on your way to Nevern and you can't miss it, it stands just on the right before the pretty bridge on the road into the village. Food is highly recommended here and the drinks selection is vast. You and your pup can enjoy post-walk refreshments in the dog friendly beer garden, a particularly lovely spot on a sunny day.

The Route

From the main gate of Neven Church, take a right and follow the footpath between a stream and the churchyard wall. Take a left by a cottage and cross a small footbridge over the stream to continue along the stony track.

As you come to the road, turn right and continue uphill where at a bend, you will need to keep straight following a path signposted ‘Pilgrims Cross’. You will reach the cross carved on the rock face to your right after around 50 yards. This is known to be associated with the pilgrim route to St Davids and it is said that the wall here conceals an ancient burial site behind.

Continue along the path which is pleasantly shaded by overhanging trees and proceed over the stile, through the wooded valley. Ensuring the fence is to your left, cross a stile and proceed through the trees. Following a ledge cut into the hillside, you will need to ascend a few rock steps to reach another stile, before crossing a field and keeping left through a metal gate.

Nevern riverside

Head down the stony track towards a building, looking out for a path going down to the right. The path leads down to a small footbridge spanning a stream. Keep straight on across a concrete drive going to the left of a garage and then to the right of a cottage.

Head through the trees - just above the river. On coming to Pont Newydd Farmhouse, take a left to follow a track. Soon you will cross a stone bridge and on joining a surfaced lane, keep going past Llangwynmair Manor Hotel. Just past the derelict farm buildings, take a left turn up a footpath and proceed through the gate.

Once you reach three gateways, take the middle path and skate between high banks with an abundance of flowers. Continue over the stile and through a field to cross another stile, taking a left turn along a road leading you over a stone bridge, returning to the church.

Route Distance

This Pembrokeshire dog walk is approximately 3 miles long.
