Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber: A Pembrokeshire Dog Walk

Explore history with this Pembrokeshire walk for you and your dog

Golden retriever dogs at Pentre Ifan, Pembrokeshire

Sightsee one of the best historical sights in the region with this Pembrokeshire dog walk around Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber and the surrounding landscape. Nestled on the outskirts of Newport, this is a beloved walk for those holidaying with dogs in the northern district of West Wales.

Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber lies on the slopes of the Preseli Mountains in Pembrokeshire and is reputed to be one of the best examples of an early Neolithic tomb in the UK.

On this particular Pembrokeshire dog walk, there is some hard-surfaced lane walking, woodland tracks, bridleways and footpaths over fields. There are several stiles and 'kissing' gates to be aware of and some sections can be particularly muddy after heavy rainfall.

The Route

From the Pentre Ifan car park, follow the concrete track south towards the Pentre Ifan Centre. Take the first turning right indicated by a bridleway sign and then follow the track that skirts the buildings, keeping on this trail until you reach a footbridge crossing a stream. Soon after, take the right-hand track and continue straight ahead through Pentre Ifan Wood.

Turn left at a bridleway sign and then continue towards a wooden gate on the right. Go through the gate turning left before you reach the second gate and continue to follow the path. You will eventually re-enter woodland, 'The Ugly Wood', where you continue to follow blue arrows up the hill. Pass through a wooden gate making your way up a rocky, sunken track and then go through a 5-bar wooden gate.

Turn left and walk along the lane, over a cattle grid before turning left sharply onto a hard-surfaced lane. Continue ahead until you reach the Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber sign on the road. Turn left through the wooden gate and proceed to the Burial Chamber where you can enjoy a picnic and take plenty of photos of your pups posing under the impressively large capstone.

After visiting the Burial Chamber, retrace your footsteps back to the lane and turn left. Continue until you reach two metal field gates on your left. Take the one to the left, there should be a public footpath sign hidden in the hedge indicating the route. Keep to the left edge of the field as you follow the course downhill, then go through another field gate across a farm track.

Cross the track on your right and go though the field gate with a sharp left turn which will then see you heading across the field to a stile that crosses a stonewall. Please note: This stile may be difficult for the bigger or older dog to cross.

After passing the stile, continue straight ahead then turn left at a yellow wooden sign and continue to a stile on your left into woodland. Cross the stile and turn left at a footpath sign, follow the path, crossing a small stream over stone stepping stones.

On the other side, follow the woodland path until you come to a footpath sign and broad forest track.

Turn right down the track and continue until you pass Pentre Ifan Centre once again. Turn left up the concrete track to return to the car park.

Route Distance

This Pembrokeshire dog walk is approximately 2.82 miles long.

Facilities

There are no immediate facilities on this walk, so you might want to bring along a picnic to enjoy. The nearest facilities and amenities are located in the nearby village of Newport where there are plenty of places to eat and drink as well as public toilets, convenience stores and even a couple of beaches.

How to find it

Pentre Ifan is about 3km from Newport and can be reached by taking the A487 east of Newport towards Cardigan for about 2km. Turn right towards Brynberian and Pentre Ifan Burial Chamber car park is approximately 1.4km down this lane on the right. If you are coming west from Cardigan on the A487, you'll pass through Felindre Farchog and will need to take a left-hand fork in the road approximately 400 metres on, following the route up a small country lane. After 500 metres, you will come to a crossroads where Pentre Ifan car park is located opposite.
