So the next time you're jumping in the car with your furry best friend, make sure to bear these recommendations in mind for a smooth ride.
Our top travel tips for holidaying with your dog
- Schedule some pitstops along the way for a little walk around and a toilet break. Every couple of hours should be okay, and it helps to break up the journey for both you and your canine.
- Bring water and a bowl. You can get handy collapsible bowls these days which take up even less space, or handy dog water bottles.
- Pets travel better on empty stomachs, so it is best not to feed them within two hours of setting off
- Always travel with your dog in a cage. This means that if you have to brake suddenly, your pup will be safer than if they weren't a cage.
- If you don’t have a cage, it is recommended to use a harness (do not use their collar) and a lead secured to a headrest.
- Make sure there is always plenty of fresh air in the car.
- Don’t let the car get too hot inside - especially if you are parked up.
