Pembrokeshire in January
Things to do in Pembrokeshire in January
With biting cold breezes coming in from the sea tempting you to retire to an open fire, January can be a wonderful respite from the ‘real world’.
January in Pembrokeshire is one of our favourite months of the whole year. Like much of the winter months, can bring storms, damp days, days with never-ending rain and similarly, some belters where the sun decides to shine.
With days promising to be longer but not really fulfilling that promise yet, January is one of the quietest months to be in the county. This time of year in West Wales can be ideal for those who don’t enjoy big crowds and busy towns, with plenty of things to enjoy still.
Enjoy Empty Beaches
During the summer, the beaches are heavy with holidaymakers. But in January you may well get a beach all to yourself. If the weather is fine, you can stroll along the sand at Broad Haven down to Little Haven when the tide is at its lowest. To really get away from it all, head to a quiet cove at Ceibwr Bay, Traeth Llyfn or Swanlake Bay Beach.
Winter Walks
The walking possibilities in West Wales seem endless. As well as the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the county is crisscrossed with trails, footpaths and bridleways where you can enjoy long rambles through beautiful countryside. If it’s fine on the coast, take a cliff walk to Barafundle or head inland towards Stackpole for glorious views of the Bosherston Lily Ponds.
Storm Watching
It’s inevitable that a few winter storms will pass through Pembrokeshire during the winter months. There are some amazing places for storm-watching around the county, including Strumble Head where Atlantic breakers send sea spray over the headland and as high as the lighthouse. For less exposed - but equally dramatic - storm watching, head for Saundersfoot where you can watch the waves crash against the beach wall.
Quiet Quality Surf
Whether you want to jump in the water or simply watch, you’re likely to catch some spectacular surfing waves in January. Winter waves tend to be larger and more powerful than other seasons, providing quality conditions for Pembrokeshire’s surfing elite. Depending on conditions on the day, surfing can be enjoyed or viewed at West Dale, Marloes, Manorbier, Newgale, Whitesands, Tenby, Aberreiddy, and the most popular for surfing, Freshwater West
Fireside Drinks
You can wrap up warm beside a roaring fire and enjoy each other’s company, whether in the comfort of your own holiday home or by the fireside in a local pub. Many of our holiday properties have wood-burning stoves, which take the chill off a cold winter’s evening. Or you can enjoy a drink or two around the fire at Wisemans Bridge Inn near Saundersfoot, The Old Pointhouse in Angle, The Bishops in St Davids, or The Ship Inn in Trefin.
Quaint Villages
Pembrokeshire’s picturesque villages are at their best during the quiet season when you’re likely to get the narrow lanes to yourself. Close to St Davids are the beautiful villages of Solva, Abereiddy and Trefin. Take a trip down south and enjoy a peaceful Tenby, which can get overrun with tourists at other times of the year.
Wide Choice of Holiday Cottages
January is one of the quietest months for accommodation bookings, so you will have a wide range of properties to choose from for your winter getaway. From cliff-top sea-view houses and luxury retreats to harbourside sleep two properties and quaint country cottages with character, you’ll be spoilt for choice of accommodation options at low-season rates.
