How to Improve the Outdoor Space of your Holiday Cottage

Indoor and outdoor spaces are equally important, make sure to pay attention to both

The outdoor space at your holiday cottage is just as important as the inside so when you’re looking at how to design the interiors, make sure not to forget about the outdoors. After all, guests in the summer season may very well be spending more time in the garden than indoors – especially if we have those beautiful sunny days Wales is famous for, of course.

The interior design of your holiday cottage sets the tone for how your outdoor space should look. If your cottage is decorated with neutral tones, quality furniture and luxury soft furnishings, make sure to continue this outdoors. Not only will this create two spaces which complement each other perfectly, but it will provide a space you know your guests will want to spend time in.

Don’t forget, potential guests decide on their holiday accommodation largely through the photographs and the description of the property. It is vital then to make sure that your holiday property, including the garden, looks visually pleasing and welcoming.

Garden Furniture

Whilst standard wooden picnic benches and plastic garden furniture does the job, think about upgrading to quality garden furniture which looks more aesthetically pleasing and adds a more luxurious element to your garden.

You also want to make sure any outside furniture you do have is well maintained ready for every guest throughout the season. Sometimes, it’s those little details which make the world of difference. If your parasol is looking a little tired, swap it out for a new one and rid yourself of the old sun-faded one. If you’re keeping the wooden table, make sure it doesn’t look too weathered by giving it a new lick of paint before the season starts. (Note – this can also be applied to indoors furniture and the exterior of the house!)

The Lawns

Maintenance of the lawns is really important. Regular mowing and trimming of the hedges should be standard, just like the interior clean is. People won’t want to spend their time outdoors in an overgrown jungle of uncut lawns and unkempt hedgerows so keep your gardens well-maintained, and guests are more likely to become repeat clients.

Paved Terraces & Decked Balconies

Paving and decked areas are preferable over gravelled spaces as they are sturdier underfoot, making them more suitable for small children and anyone who is not so steady on their feet. Plus, the flat level terrain works better for pushchairs and wheelchairs as there are no stray stones to potentially cause issues.

Is Your Space Enclosed?

An enclosed outdoor space is a game-changer for many visitors. Those with children and dogs are always asking us to recommend cottages with enclosed gardens as it provides a sense of security. By ensuring you have fenced off your garden, it contains the family within the space – no risk of dogs or children running loose down the street this way.

Added Extras

Pampering your guests with one or two luxurious added extras in your outdoor space is yet another great way of enticing them to stay with you again and again. Plus they can also help to extend the season beyond the peak weeks.

For instance, something like a fire pit or chiminea which provides warmth and a wonderful atmospheric setting is perfect for those chillier weeks in the year when the weather is dry but cold. Remember that guests may be visiting from homes where they have no outdoor spaces – they’ll take any chance to spend some time in their own private outdoors space.

Barbecues and outdoor pizza ovens are becoming more and more popular, and with social distancing coming into force, more and more guests may be looking for these extra ways they can turn dining at home into a different and more special experience.

Last but not least, the hot tub. It’s no wonder that holiday cottages with hot tubs are sought after by guests. They offer an extra layer of luxury to a holiday and are the perfect way to enhance an already relaxing coastal break. Again, a hot tub is a great way to extend your letting season as people will use a hot tub rain or shine!
