When you think of Coastal Cottages, you may associate us with fantastic family cottages with stunning sea views, or quaint little cottages nestled away in the countryside. Yes, we do indeed have a great range of cottages which match those idyllic cottage images you may have in mind, but don’t be fooled into thinking that is all we can offer you.
We also have a selection of "something different" properties. For instance, there's Penrhyn in Strumble Head which has no electricity; there's The Rocket Carthouse near Angle which was once the Coastguard watchtower and there's Melin Abereiddy in Abereiddy, a restored 18th Century mill.
One property not to be forgotten in this list of unusual properties is the Great House in Laugharne.
Great House is entirely that, a great house. But to leave it at that would not do this property justice, it is both impressive and magnificent. Once derelict, the owners of this property have taken their time in restoring this property into a property only to be described as grand.
Built in the 18th Century, Great House is of a Georgian era and retains many of those historical features which may somewhat remind you of a Jane Austen novel. With high ceilings, extensive wood panelling, decorative plaster work and huge sash windows with original working shutters; chances are, Great House is unlike many other cottages you’ve stayed in before.
With four bedrooms, this property sleeps a total of ten plus it welcomes two dogs which are confined to the lower ground floor only. Three of the bedrooms boast ensuite bathrooms complete with roll top baths whilst the attic houses a suite of its own with a kingsize double, a twin bedroom and an open-plan living area.
And the grandeur doesn’t stop with the bedrooms; the hallway is nothing less than impressive with a dog leg staircase and the formal panelled dining room is perfect for sophisticated dinner parties. The fitted kitchen has a modern design and one of the reception rooms even has a wood-burning stove perfect for those evenings curling up with a good book.
If you’re already impressed, you haven’t heard the best bit yet. Treat yourself to a spot of alfresco dining on the outdoor terrace whilst the dogs enjoy roaming the lawned walled garden, and don’t forget to bring along your swimming costume because Great House has its very own outdoor heated swimming pool.
The location for this property really is the cherry on top. Great House is situated in the charming village of Laugharne which once captured the heart of famous Welsh poet, Dylan Thomas. Thomas made his home at The Boathouse overlooking the estuary, which is just a short walk from Great House. Dylan Thomas’ Boathouse is now a popular heritage centre for those interested in learning more about the writer and where he chose to spend his last few years. The likes of Under Milkwood and Poem in October were both inspired by Laugharne and its inhabitants, and were written in his Writing Shed behind the Boathouse.
Thomas was also a regular visitor to the peaceful Georgian and Victorian gardens at Laugharne Castle, as was author Richard Hughes (Surrey-born writer famous for classic A High Wind in Jamaica). A traditional medieval structure, Laugharne Castle was first established in the 13th Century before being used in Tudor times as a private mansion for dignitary Sir John Perrot, giving the village a long-standing connection with majestic houses.

Its famous former resident, the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, put the town of Laugharne on the map. Describing it as a "legendary, lazy little black-magical bedlam by the sea", Thomas lived in the Boathouse (now a heritage centre) and is buried at St Martin's Church, both of which are within easy reach of our Laugharne holiday cottages.
