Pembrokeshire Beaches
Will you build a sandcastle, go surfing or enjoy a refreshing sea swim? The activities
With 186 miles of coastline, Pembrokeshire is spoilt for choice when it comes to spectacular beaches. So where do you start?
Well thankfully, no two beaches are the same. Some are epic with long sandy shores worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster (and have been known to be just that) whilst others are what you might call pocket-sized in comparison. Choose between secluded shingle bays, narrow inlet coves, once-working harbours and the exclusive secret beaches locals feign to know about when questioned.
And just as no two beaches are the same, no two days at the beach are the same. Spend mornings stretching your legs on the sand with your furry four-legged pal, dog owners will appreciate there is no happier feeling than watching your pooch dive into the first waves of the day. Lunch comes in the form of picnic baskets, sandwiches and perhaps an ice cream from the nearby cafe before an energy-packed afternoon of watersports and swimming.
Wind down with a book as you soak in the sun’s rays of an afternoon or take the little ones for a spot of rock-pooling at the cliff’s undersides for a relaxing yet enjoyable few hours. Challenge the whole family to a game of beach cricket or volleyball whilst the designated cook fires up the barbecue for burgers and hot dogs by the sea. Break out the flask and bask in the warm air whilst the sun sets and you watch the tide slowly make its way back inland, before braving a midnight dip in the cool glow of the full moon.
Pembrokeshire has the perfect beach for your dream seaside stay. Head to Broad Haven or Tenby for convenient facilities close at hand, try Whitesands for watersports and Newport (Parrog or Sands)for dog friendly. Some are only accessible via the Coast Path such as Barafundle Bay and Swanlake Bay, whilst some have beach wheelchairs for hire making them accessible to all!
Thousands flock to Tenby’s North Beach year after year for the Long Course Weekend and Ironman Wales, whilst others prefer the easier swimming events of the Boxing Day and the New Year’s Day Swims. For one-of-a-kind experiences and for stories you’ll want to tell your friends, make sure to leave a sock at Dobby’s grave in Freshwater West and stop off at Abermawr Beach during an extremely low tide for breathtaking views of the sunken forest.
