I was lucky enough to have the company of my partner David and his sister Gemma for my stretch from Freshwater West to West Angle Beach.
We arrived at our starting point of Freshwater West and parked in one of the free car parks overlooking the beautiful golden beach, full of tall sand dunes. The weather was cloudy, but you could see a bright blue sky trying to appear through. Exposed to the wind, this beach is particularly popular with surfers and windsurfers.
The sandy path runs along the foot of the dunes, following the path to the right, you can see the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path leading towards the first gate. The views are beautiful from the start and are ever-changing.
The path becomes more demanding as it meanders along the cliffs with many ascents and descents along the way. Each with small wooden bridges at the bottom and running streams flowing underneath. One descent, there are around 50 steps leading to the bottom, so be prepared and perhaps use sticks to make your walk more comfortable. The view ahead includes St Ann’s Head near Dale in the distance, you pass the natural arch at Guttle Hole, continue around Whitedole Bay and a view of sheep island.
The route continues past Castles Bay to reach the impressive blowhole of the Welcome Pit, soon after you pass above Rat Island with the path swinging east. Along the way, we walked amongst many sheep and stopped by some horses to refresh so make sure to keep dogs on leads if hiking with your furry friends.
The path seems to flatten out and soon West Angle Beach comes into view with Thorn Island off the headland. Continue on the path descending to West Angle Beach and you will come across Wavecrest Café. Situated right on the beachfront, here you can grab yourself a hot or cold drink with some delicious food and enjoy whilst taking in the amazing views. It is closed throughout December; times can vary for the rest of the year, but these can be found on their website. Next to Wavecrest Café and in front of the beach, there is a pay and display car park also.
We didn’t choose to take two cars and park at either end of our walk, so after a short break at West Angle Beach, we continued through the lovely village of Angle and walked back to our starting point along the road. Taking in nature and passing some beautiful properties along the way, we made it back to our starting point, with our last view being back across the golden sand of Freshwater West.
