Pembrokeshire: A Walker's Paradise

Lace up the walking boots for a memorable holiday

Pembrokeshire Coast Path

Walking holidays and Pembrokeshire go hand in hand. After all, it has arguably the best coastal path in the world (you won’t change our minds) with extraordinary views from every stretch.

Upon its launch back in 1970, the 186 mile Pembrokeshire Coast Path became the first National Trail in Wales and nowadays forms part of the wider Wales Coast Path, an 870-mile coastal trail that covers the entire Welsh coastline.

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs from St Dogmaels in the north to Amroth in the south, joining onto the Ceredigion Coast Path and the Carmarthenshire Coast Path respectively. Being rural Wales, you can expect a hilly pathway with some 35,000 feet of ascent and descent - certainly a challenge for those who intend on walking the entire thing!

You may even see some determined (some might say a little bonkers) souls attempting to run the path and thankfully for those who prefer something a  little easier and a lot more leisurely, there are stretches that are fairly level and wheelchair friendly too.

That’s part of the beauty of a walking holiday in Pembrokeshire, it fills you with a sense of beauty and freedom you’ll fail to replicate elsewhere. Head out for a  half-hour stretching of the legs, an evening stroll to see the sunset or a day-long hike and you’ll easily find what you’re looking for.

You needn’t pack any specialist equipment, though a decent pair of walking boots will go a long way - 186 miles and beyond you might say.

That said, it’s always better to be prepared on the Coast Path. Pack a bottle of water, a map and a packed lunch or some jelly beans for when you need a burst of energy after a steep uphill climb and you’re away.

Did you know? The Wales Coast Path is also part of the International Appalachian Trail.
