Countryside Escapes in Pembrokeshire
Take life at a slower pace and explore Pembrokeshire's lesser-travelled roads
When you visualise holidays in Pembrokeshire, you likely conjure up images of soft sandy beaches and beautiful blue shorelines, but there’s so much more to our western region waiting to be discovered. That's why countryside escapes in Pembrokeshire are a must.
Whilst we can’t recommend exploring the Pembrokeshire coast enough, (it is truly world-class) sometimes we like to issue little reminders to venture further inland to the heart of the county. We’re a community bursting with farmland, rolling fields and woodlands, where the wildlife is rich and evident around every corner. To only pay attention to the stunning coastline would be a crime to the magnificent countryside bordered by the wild seas here.
Why plan a rural cottage holiday in Pembrokeshire?
Choose a stay in the country and enjoy life at a more leisurely pace. Throw ideas of jam-packed itineraries out of the window and replace them with unplanned days wandering and roaming free. Pop on your walking boots and head into the hills to reconnect with nature, soaking up glorious views over the wide-open spaces and bask in the tranquillity of the paths lesser travelled. Burrow your way into the unkempt woodlands in search of birds, insects and flowerbeds filled with colour. The only belongings you’ll need are perhaps a camera and a pair of binoculars, leave that phone at home!
The best way to make the most of a rural retreat is to truly disconnect with a fully digital detox, at least if only when you’re out and about. Embrace outdoors adventures like walking, wild swimming and slow cycle rides through the country lanes; find an open field and stop off for a few minutes of meditation or a spontaneous yoga session to stretch out those muscles and ease any tensions.

Green spaces like you’ll find in the countryside have a wealth of benefits; physical because the natural beauty encourages to explore but mental also. The lack of urban life results in cleaner, fresher quality of air whilst vast open settings of green spaces has been proven to reduce stress and encourage calmer states of mind.
Travel to the deepest areas of rural countryside and make sure to step outside once the sun has gone down, for you’ll be met with unforgettable views of the night’s sky. Rural landscapes are the best for stargazing and on clear nights, you’ll be greeted with a blanket of incredible stars above. Budding astronomers should make a point of packing your telescope as there are several Dark Sky Discovery Sites in the area.
What lies in the Pembrokeshire Countryside?
It is often in this overlooked rurality where you will find magnificent hidden gems; think Pentre Ifan, the Preseli Hills and the Cleddau estuary. All are areas steeped in history and plentiful in wildlife, peaceful settings perfect for a restorative getaway. It is here that you will find some of our most traditional and characterful cottages, decorated with exposed beams and slate floors. You’ll find cosy rooms centred around open fireplaces and woodburning stoves; holiday cottages where the main room of the house is the farmhouse kitchen complete with Aga.
The best thing about a rural escape in Pembrokeshire is that you are never too far from the coast. Being enclosed on three sides by the ocean has its perks and that means that no matter where you are, it’s only ever a short drive to the sea.
Escape to the country in Pembrokeshire and have the best of both worlds; serenity and green spaces with blue seas and sandy bays just around the corner. Coast and country, at its very best.
