Dinas Island: Two Pembrokeshire Dog Walks

Choose between two routes, a 7-mile walk or a 3-mile walk

Dinas Island

Plan a hike around Dinas Island where you'll find two Pembrokeshire dog walks on offer, both with incredible views and a plethora of wildlife. This circular route is set to become a firm favourite though note that it can be steep in areas and some sections are close to the coast, so always be careful.

Easily misconstrued, you would be forgiven for thinking that Dinas Island is in fact, an island. Whilst it is not an island as you might imagine, the headland here is partially separated from the mainland having been formed by an Ice Age meltwater many years ago. It's a real favourite amongst wildlife watchers and you'll find out why when you visit.

The full route follows a 7-mile circular around the island whilst there is a shorter option available too, measured at 3 miles in length.

The Route

The longer walk around Dinas Island takes you through the peaceful village of Dinas, the two seaside bays of Pwllgwaelod and Cwm yr Eglwys then around the coastal headland known as Dinas Head.

The shorter walk concentrates just on the protruding headland, starting at say Cwm Yr Elgwys and working your way anti-clockwise to the most northerly tip of the headland before venturing back towards the mainland at Pwllgwaelod. Pwllgwaelod and Cwm Yr Egwlys are connected via an inland fairly level pathway, meaning you can easily start at either location and access the other without walking back on yourself along the Coastal Path.

Along the walk, you will spot many coastal wildflowers including foxgloves, heather, thrift, orchids and in the spring, bluebells. Take in the rugged coast and breathtaking views, for you'll look straight out onto Cardigan Bay from the viewpoints along this stretch of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path. Dolphins and Porpoises can often be seen from the headland here as this region is well known for having resident sea life such as this.

On clear days from the high cliffs on Dinas Head, you can even see the Preseli Hills inland where there are more dog walks and a rich history to be discovered. Look along the coastline to see Newport Sands further along the coast, a top spot for a splash in the waves if you haven't been enticed by the waters of Pwllgwaelod or Cwm Yr Eglwys.

Dinas is famous for its birdlife so make sure not to forget your binoculars if you're a seabird enthusiast. During the summertime, razorbills, fulmars, shag and guillemots breed on these cliffs whilst in winter, you're likely to see chough, herring, ravens and greater/lesser black-backed gulls.

Route Distance

Choose between a 7-mile walk or a 3-mile walk.

Facilities

Pwllgwaelod is best known for The Old Sailors pub, an inviting tavern which lies right on the seafront and is often referred to as having one of the best beer gardens in Pembrokeshire due to the breathtaking sea views it offers. It's a seasonal pub, so it's always best to check opening times directly if you plan on calling in.

Cwm Yr Eglwys has a handy wooden hut where come the summer months, you can purchase chilled refreshments such as cans of soft drink and ice creams.

Both seaside villages have public toilets.

For further facilities and amenities, you are best heading to either Fishguard or Newport as these are both larger towns where you'll find a range of pubs, cafes and convenience stores.
