Some of Pembrokeshire's most epic and iconic locations host brilliant outdoors theatre performances every summer holidays. Between late July and early September, you can likely purchase tickets for a Shakespeare play in castle grounds and take the children to a family-friendly comedy under the stars.
Festival Arts hosts three different performances summer; usually a Shakespeare play that uses the breathtaking ruins of St Davids Bishops Palace as a backdrop and a child-friendly retelling of a classic story tale that takes place at Mathry Community Hall. These two are the main events, taking place on alternative nights for a couple of weeks allowing theatregoers to easily take in a performance of each. Their third show often consists of a poetry night at the Palace once again, often on limited dates.
Their 2023 season consists of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night at St Davids Bishops Palace and Woven Words as their poetry nights. In Mathry, they shall be performing Puss in Boots - And Cat Without.
Carew Castle is another venue known to host open air theatre throughout the summer holidays so if you're looking for a memorable night of live theatre in a truly unforgettable setting, this is one for you.
Their 2023 season includes Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Wizard of Oz and a performance of the children's book, Bad Dad, written by David Walliams.
Pembroke Castle, birthplace of Henry VII, is guaranteed to have a busy events calendar every school holidays but none more so than during the summer weeks. Alongside music concerts, food festivals, children's activity days and sunset cinema outdoors film screenings; this medieval castle is famous for it's outdoors theatre during July and August.
As part of their 2023 season, you can enjoy a performance of The Wind in the Willows, the classic Jane Austen story of Sense and Sensibility as well as The Comedy of Errors.
In the bordering county of Ceredigion, just across the water from St Dogmaels which is Pembrokeshire's most northerly town, you will find Cardigan Castle. Famous for it's tumultuous past with royal visits and being burnt down by a fire; Cardigan Castle always promises a fantastic night out at the theatre during summer.
