Carew Castle and Tidal Mill: A Pembrokeshire Dog Walk
An historic dog walk in Carew with a castle for a focal point
The beautifully-located dog friendly walk in Pembrokeshire around Carew Castle and Tidal Mill is a mile-round walk, where dogs are welcome on leads.
On arriving at the start point in Carew, (where there is sometimes an ice-cream van on warm, sunny days!), you will find the entrance to Carew Castle not too far away - perfect if you're planning a family day out and fancy combining it with a dog walk.
This Pembrokeshire dog walk follows a circular route on a flat concrete surface, making it accessible for those with wheelchairs and pushchairs. You'll find plenty of excellent photo opportunities along the way with beautiful views across the water to the castle.
The Route
Begin your walk from the Carew Castle Car Park, turning left out of the parking area and following the pavement downhill to cross the bridge. Turn left and follow the road with the castle across the water opposite until you reach the next car park where you'll find picnic tables and benches, ideal for a leisurely alfresco lunch before continuing you walk.
Take the footpath to continue around the mill pond, following the curved trail as it takes you towards the Tidal Mill. From here to the Mill, the surface underfoot changes from concrete to a level gravelled path leading to the peaceful picnic area.
Make sure to stop for photos of the Tidal Mill, even if you aren't stopping to tour the inside. From here, continue along the circular walk to reach Carew Castle, entering the attraction for a great family day out. The Castle often hosts family fun days, summer theatre programmes and even outdoors cinema.
The Carew Inn is located only a minute's walk across the road opposite the Castle and is home to a beer garden, marquee area, bar and restaurant. It's dog friendly in certain areas and the food is always delicious, making it a perfect pitstop for refreshments pre or post-walk.
