Blessed with a beautiful sunny day, although windy, our starting point today is St Brides. This picturesque bay is home to a church (St Bridgit) and a castle and attracts divers, kayakers and birdwatchers due the abundance of marine wildlife and stunning coastal scenery.
Passing a small picnic area, the path climbs gradually up along the cliffs following a stonewall for quite some distance. This stretch of coast path is relatively flat and offers spectacular views northwards out across St Brides Bay, where you can spot the village of Solva and Ramsey Island in the distance.
The path meanders in and out offering great views of rocky beaches below, only accessible by kayak. I have paddled this stretch many times and have enjoyed the wonders of circumnavigating Skomer Island, home to Manx Shearwaters and Puffins and a host of other wildlife. You'll catch a glimpse of Skomer as the path turns a corner and heads south towards Musselwick, a beautiful sandy beach reached only at low tide. Roughly carved steps into the rock lead you down onto the beach and this was going to be our lunch spot for today.
Continuing on, the path turns west, here you may encounter some of the wild ponies along this walk amongst other wildlife as we watched Gannets as they dived into the waters to catch fish and also caught a glimpse of the odd Atlantic grey seal floating in the waters below.
The path is surrounded by gorse, now coming into blossom which adds a faint aroma of coconut into the air. The path soon begins to descend into Martins Haven, the departure point for the ferry to Skomer, a visit well-worth making in spring to see the puffins and the island abloom with bluebells.
