Brunel Quay, Neyland to Haverfordwest: A Dog Friendly Walk
Em-bark on an adventure from Brunel Quay all the way to Haverfordwest
Part of the National Cycle Network, Brunel Quay Cycleway is a purpose-built, off-road path following the disused railway from Neyland Marina to Johnston, then a gently undulating route into Haverfordwest.
Starting at the pretty destination of Neyland Marina with it's scenes of bobbing boats, this is a favourite amongst locals in need of a quick and easy level pathway for walking and cycling. It's a popular and shared path, so please expect to encounter cyclists, wheelchair users, mums and toddlers with prams and walkers - who may or may not be with their four-legged friends! Due to the nature of this trail, dogs must be kept under control at all times.
The path is ample and well surfaced with a wealth of wildlife inhabiting the undisturbed banks on either side of the cycle route, so why not explore this popular dog walk in Pembrokeshire and discover these exciting new places with your pooch?
Please note: you will encounter a number of road crossings on your way. All of which are clearly marked by specially designed 'A' frame gates to ensure that they keep other vehicles off the cycleway and to warn users of the path of the approaching junctions. All the junctions are minor roads which again, are clearly signposted.
The Route
From the furthest car park at the end of the road at Neyland Marina, turn right to begin your trail. The hard-surfaced path is easy to walk on throughout the route and is an out-and-back route rather than circular.
Follow the picturesque Cleddau Estuary passing Westfield Pill Nature Reserve, a sheltered inlay from the Cleddau Waterway that provides a sanctuary for birds and rare plants. Then, continue along the disused railway path to Johnston. Continuing through Johnston, the cycle path progresses through Bolton Hill Woods and the water meadows of Cinnamon Grove.
As you reach the end of this section, you will notice the busy McDonalds outlet and you may spot the beautiful donkeys in the field to your right. Here, you may wish to turn around and retrace the route back to Neyland Marina, unless you fancy a sneaky visit to McDonalds first! Though we'd recommend continuing up the hill to visit The Glen for a pub lunch or venturing further into the town of Haverfordwest where you will find shops and further places to eat.
Alternatively, you could return to your starting location at Brunel Quay, and stop for a bite to eat and a rest overlooking the picturesque Neyland Marina. Dogs are welcome on the patio area overlooking the Marina and Cleddau waterway, which makes terrific photo opportunities so grab yourself a coffee and a cake from Manillas Cafe to quench that thirst.
The booking office for Shearwater Safaris is located here at Neyland Marina, offering spectacular wildlife adventures by boat where well-behaved dogs are welcome free of charge. It is well worth the trip for a unique marine wildlife experience.
Route Distance
This Pembrokeshire dog walk is approximately 9 miles long.
Facilities
At Neyland Marina, there are a couple of places to go for refreshments including The Bar Restaurant and Manillas Cafe, where the cakes and breakfasts come highly recommended! With views overlooking the River Cleddau and the Marina, we recommend enjoying a relaxing drink here by the water after your walk.
How to find it
From the A477 Honeyborough Roundabout, follow the signs for 'Neyland Marina' down through the Neyland High Street. As you approach the Marina entrance, you will see a green wooded area on your left. Turn left through the two anchors and go straight past the boat yards to the end of the road. If this car park is full, then you can park in either of the car parks you have passed on your right-hand side, located by the dog-friendly Brunel Cafe and Bar/Restaurant.
Parking
Parking is available in several car parks along the waterfront at Neyland Marina (SA73 1PY).
Start/Finish
