Maenclochog to Rosebush: A Dog-Friendly Walk
Rural Pembrokeshire at its best
This popular dog-friendly Pembrokeshire walk offers three different routes, allowing you to choose the walk most suitable for you and your dog. Whichever course you choose, you'll discover the beauty of this inland area which backs onto the Preseli Hills which are steeped in history.
This versatile walk is suitable for all to enjoy with many magnificent viewpoints throughout where you can admire the picturesque delights of Pembrokeshire’s hidden history here.
The following route takes you from Maenclochog to Rosebush, though there are two alternative routes on offer if you'd like to extend your hike. From the north of Maenclochog, you could continue right to the edge of the Coastal Path for breathtaking sea views along one of the most rugged stretches of the Path or you can venture further inland along the footpaths and bridleways that wander the Preseli Hills to explore the land where legends say King Arthur and Merlin once roamed.
The Route
Leave Maenclochog Castle Car Park heading north towards Caffi Sgwar and follow the pavement past the Chapel. Stroll past St Mary’s Church towards the edge of the village and turn right after the very last house, down a no-through lane.
Follow this lane, enjoy rural views over the Preseli Hills until you reach a newer path situated alongside a stream. This newer path will lead you into woodlands and a gate which you will need to pass through. Soon you'll reach a boarded walkway leading you across wetlands until you come to another gate which takes you onto a minor road.
Whilst you could turn around at this point to head back to the village, the continued route takes you left where you will briefly follow the road before taking the next right through a farm gate onto an uphill winding pathway. Take the time to witness the views from this part of the path as they really are spectacular.
Upon reaching the top of the hill, go over the stile and cross the bridleway over another stile which leads you down into Rosebush. Please note, this section can be somewhat muddy so don't wear boots you don't want to get messy!
Once you come to the main road, take the right into the village and go straight on to the Old Post Office. This leads you onto an array of pathways through the forestland. Take the pathway to the left, which takes you down to the quirky country pub, Tafarn Sinc.
Tafarn Sinc is your turning point to head back the way you came, though we recommend stopping here for a drink and a bite to eat if you have the time. We would also make sure you have time to sightsee the infamous green waters of Rosebush Quarry. Wild water swimmers will want to bring along their bathers, for this is one of the most popular sites in Pembrokeshire for open water swimming.
Route Distance
This Pembrokeshire dog walk in the countryside is approximately 2 miles long, with optional longer routes available.
