Foodie Bucket List
Where do you plan on eating first?
To celebrate our fortieth birthday, we’ve put together the ultimate Pembrokeshire Bucket List with forty amazing things to do on our coast.
We've split this into four sections, one of which is our Foodie Bucket List which you will find below. The other three sections consist of our Child Friendly Bucket List, our Dog Friendly Bucket List, and our Culture & Events Bucket List. Read our Ultimate Bucket List here.
Plan your very own food journey across the streets and the coast of Pembrokeshire with our must-try foodie bucket list, these are tastes worth travelling for!
MamGu Welsh cakes
Welsh cakes are a sure-fire must eat when in Wales and although you’ll spot them on many a shelf throughout Pembrokeshire, there’s nothing better than a homemade Welsh cake - unless it’s slightly warm with a little bit of butter! Call into MamGu Welsh cakes in Solva for a cuppa and a Welsh cake after browsing the shops or walking the Coastal Path. Breakfasts, cawl and more are also on the menu.
Fish & chips at the seaside
No British holiday by the seaside is complete until you’ve tucked into a bag of fish and chips at the beach. For the ultimate chippy tea by the coast, Tenby is the place to go. Pick up your takeaway from Fecci's in town, one of the most long-standing and famous chip shops in Pembrokeshire, then head down to your favourite Tenby beach to watch the world go by. Be careful of those greedy seagulls though! Settle on the sand at South Beach or perch on one of the benches above North Beach. For an elevated view over the coast, wander to the top of Castle Hill and bask in the glorious panorama.
Crab rolls at Cafe MÔr
Head to the idyllic sand dunes at Freshwater West and you’ll no doubt spot Café MÔr, an old sea boat resurrected as the now-iconic street food vendor locals and visitors love. The team at Café MÔr are the same team behind incredible local delicacies including Pembrokeshire Sea Caviar and Barti Ddu Rum so expect something truly extraordinary from your meal here; this is no ordinary crab roll. Quality cooking, local produce and foraged ingredients are at the heart of this café making it a truly unique place to eat.
A pint with Bessie
Hidden away in the Gwaun Valley lies one of the area’s best-loved gems, the Dyffryn Arms. Topping many a “Best Pub in Wales” list and similar, this tavern is affectionately known as Bessie's after the landlady who will serve you your beer through a hatch. It’s just like having a drink with your pal; the atmosphere is friendly, cosy and inviting every time.
Sample fresh local seafood
Another no brainer. Where better to get your hands on some outstanding seafood than right by the coast? And here, the options are endless. Reserve a table at The Griffin Inn in Dale, book The Sloop Inn at Porthgain or try Rib & Oyster in Kilgetty and your tastebuds really are in for a treat. The latter is also a popular fishmonger, though you can also pick up fresh delicacies from Simply Seafood at Tenby Harbour and The Fish Plaice in Milford Haven to name a few. Most eateries feature fresh seafood on their specials menus; try mussels in St Davids, Pembrokeshire crab rolls in Lawrenny and quality lobster at The Stone Crab in Saundersfoot.

Picnic on Barafundle
There are so many beautiful picnic spots around Pembrokeshire – Barafundle Bay is always one to come out near the top of the list! Pack up your picnic basket or backpack with your favourite treats, blankets, a flask of tea or a bottle of wine and enjoy the stunning views over Barafundle Bay (accessible only via a short walk along the Coastal Path). Head here in the evening for unforgettable views of glowing skies over the peaceful shore – but don’t forget a torch! It will be dark to walk back to the car park afterwards.
Ice cream at Pointz Castle
Take the drive from Newgale to St Davids and you’ll pass a hay bale on the side of the road marking out one of the best snack joints in Pembrokeshire. The family at Pointz Castle Ice Cream are dairy farmers with their own farm-to-fork (or in this case spoon!) journey, offering scrumptious ice cream made from their cows' milk. You’ll often see their dairy herd either in the sheds or surrounding fields.
Enjoy a cone on site, take a tub home with you or make it your pit stop after sunning yourself at Porthmynawyd Beach, just a short walk from here via the Coast Path. With a wide selection of flavours, you’re sure to find a new favourite! (PS. Make sure to try the Salted Caramel!)
Get a taste for bugs
A unique one for the bucket list, this is definitely an out-of-the-ordinary experience to be given a go - if you’re brave enough! The Grub Kitchen is a revolutionary restaurant offering a menu infused with insects, the first of its kind in the UK.
Merging quality fresh local produce with edible insects, you can expect everything from bug burgers to cricket cookies with innovative dishes that will have your mouth watering. Just wait until your friends and family at home hear you’ve eaten bugs - and enjoyed them!
Farmers markets
Pembrokeshire is home to a plethora of world-class produce and the best place to pick some up is from the producers themselves, at a weekly farmers market. St Davids, Newport and Haverfordwest take place in the streets whilst you’ll find Fishguard and Pembroke markets in their town halls. St Dogmaels Market was once awarded Best in Britain and takes place in the historic Abbey.
Food festivals
Indulge in the very best of local produce with cheeses, chutneys, beers and burgers. The offerings are so good they’ll tantalise your tastebuds and you’ll likely need a trolley to take home all your goodies! Visit Cardigan River & Food Festival in August, Haverfoodfest in May and Narberth Food Festival in late September. Every other year, Fish Week takes place across the county around June.
