Mikes Hike = Complete!

A solo challenge of 186 miles in 7 days ticked off the bucket list

If you've been following us on social media or are signed up for our newsletter, you'll no doubt have heard that we here at Coastal Cottages of Pembrokeshire have been taking on Walk All Over Cancer month this March, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Living and working in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, when we started brainstorming ideas for how we could get involved with this springtime campaign, there was only really one option. We would collectively walk the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, the full 186 miles of this spectacular National Trail, in the 31 days of March. For one (slightly mad?) member of the team, taking on a small individual stretch as part of the wider team just wasn't enough of a challenge and so, Mike's Hike was born.

Our Head of IT, Mike Hughes, decided to take our team challenge and level up. Next thing we know, he's pledged to complete the entire 186 miles himself in just seven days. After a quick check of the weather forecast and a good look at a map, he had his dates in mind and his seven scenic routes carved out.

Start of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path

The Pembrokeshire Coast Path runs through so many incredible locations that we know you love just as much as we do. From Newport and Fishguard in the north, to Abercastle, Abereiddy and St Davids in the northwest. The western stretch takes you through Solva, Newgale and Broad Haven on its way to Dale, before travelling along the hidden waterway past Milford and Neyland then back out to Pembroke and Angle. The southern stretch is a real treat passing by iconic locations like Freshwater West, St Govans Chapel, Barafundle Bay and Manorbier until you reach Lydstep, Tenby and Saundersfoot.

Then with a few best wishes from the team, he was off. His one-man mission had begun in the north of the county at the monumental marker in St Dogmaels, where the Pembrokeshire Coast Path meets the wider Wales Coast Path, early on Saturday 12th March. Across the next few days, he took on distances of 22+ miles daily - always with a smile on his face.

Strumble Head Lighthouse

Thanks to modern technology, he had linked us up to his GPS (he is our Head of IT, after all, we expected nothing less!) which then allowed us and anyone keeping an eye on our Walk All Over Cancer efforts to track in real-time how he was getting on. Soon enough he became the talk of the office as he sent in breathtaking images of blue skies, rugged coastlines and magnificent seascapes from the sights along his journey, all as many of us watched him progress further along.

With a few phone calls and words of encouragement from staff in the office, a couple of whom also offered personal taxi services to help him travel to/from his start and endpoints for that day, the week went by surprisingly quick. For those of us in the office that is, envious of him exploring our home county in the beautiful spring weather that March week - it likely felt like time passed much slower at times for Mike! How he managed to find the energy to cheerfully provide us with updates and stop for photos, many of us will never understand.

Newgale Beach

Joined by our CEO Matthew on his last two days and our team member, Ollie also on his last day, the three strolled into the finish line at Amroth by all accounts - ready for a cold refreshment at The New Inn!

Head over to Mike's Hike where you can see updates and photos from him as he made his way along the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, plus you can still see the map used to track him during the week of his hike.

Freshwater West

The whole team here at Coastal Cottages are so proud of Mike and suffice to say, he deserved the surprise cake we'd ordered for his return and even more so, the round of applause we gave him.

This effort, along with our collective team effort, is all in aid of Cancer Research UK so any and all money you can donate is sincerely appreciated. We are so thankful to all of you who have already donated and offered support. All funds raised are going to help CRUK continue in its critical and life-changing work.
