The Grand Butterhill Grange Holiday Cottage

This magnificent house is guaranteed to give you memories to last a lifetime

Butterhill Grange outside

If you’re planning a getaway for a large group or looking for somewhere special to stay, Butterhill Grange near St Ishmaels is a perfect choice. Sleeping up to 16 across 7 bedrooms, this is a fantastic property that will certainly make your Pembrokeshire holiday a memorable one.

Butterhill Grange

To say Butterhill Grange is unique is somewhat an understatement. Now a beautifully restored holiday home, this property has a particularly interesting history dating back to the 12th Century with origins as a priory farm. A Grade II listed building, Butterhill Grange as we know it now was built in the early 1700s but has since been extensively restored after a period of dereliction from the 1960s onwards.

Previously the building was once requisitioned as accommodation for Royal Air Force officers. It is also said that the property acted as a family home for members of the well-established Roche family of Pembrokeshire. Adam de la Roche, born in 1160, built Roch Castle further north along the west coast of Pembrokeshire and also founded Pill Priory in 1200, a monastic church located nearby to Butterhill Grange at Milford Haven.

The current owners have lovingly restored Butterhill Grange to a magnificent standard, creating a contemporary and comfortable feel to this wonderful stately home. With 7 spacious bedrooms, most of which are ensuite, there is plenty of room to gather multiple generations of the family under one room – you can even bring along two pets for a full family holiday! You will also be pleased to know that child-friendly items are provided including a cot, highchair and stairgate if you’re bringing along the little ones.

The property is set on an acre of grounds with woodland and an interesting shell grotto which is being restored making Butterhill Grange a superb haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The house is home to rare bats in the cellars and the largest roost of house martins in the eaves too!

A little further away you will find Dale – a favourite for those who love to spend their days in the sea. Here you will have the opportunity to try your hand at watersports with an equipment hire centre and lessons available to book. Seafood lovers best make a special effort to dine at The Griffin Inn overlooking the water, it comes highly recommended as one of the best places to eat seafood in Pembrokeshire.

Travel to Martins Haven and catch the boat across to Skomer Island for impressive views of the largest colony of puffins in the whole of Britain. The best time to visit for these seabirds is between April and July when they arrive and settle to nest, before starting to depart in August. Skomer trips are particularly popular during these months so it is advised to get to Martins Haven early to book your place if you plan on visiting the island.

Further afield you have the entire west coast of Pembrokeshire surrounding St Brides Bay to explore. Great watersports locations can be found along here with the 2 mile stretch of sand at Newgale proving a favourite; the blue flag beach at Broad Haven is ideal for family days out with shops, eateries and lifeguard patrols through the high season. Walk the coastal path along this stretch of Pembrokeshire and you are guaranteed stunning views across the water and nearby islands.

Don’t forget though, that stays at Butterhill Grange are not limited to large family getaways. Book a stay for you and 15 of your closest friends to celebrate a big birthday or special anniversary, or perhaps make this the location for a countryside wedding. Imagine autumnal bride and groom photographs in the woodlands or springtime wedding breakfasts on the front terrace.
