Aberfforest Holiday Cottages in Wales

A Peaceful Beachside Hamlet

Aberfforest Holiday Cottages in Wales

Bring together all your loved ones for a seaside holiday like no other with a stay in Aberfforest. Nestled along the north Pembrokeshire coastline, you’ll find a petite sand shingle cove here backed by a tiny hamlet of holiday homes.

Set only two miles from the likes of Newport and Dinas, this is a fantastic location for a coastal escape. Despite its close proximity to these two bustling villages, Aberfforest is one of the lesser-visited beaches in the county making it a perfect choice for anyone looking to venture off the beaten path and explore the wider Pembrokeshire coast.

What to Do in Aberfforest

A total of six-holiday cottages share the location at Aberfforest, sleeping up to 39 people in total, so that’s plenty of room for family holidays and group get-togethers. Of course, they can also be booked individually if you don’t fancy getting away with 38 members of your family! Separately they accommodate between 2 and 12 people, so you’ll still be able to find something to suit your requirements whatever your party size.

At Aberfforest, each property is practically just a stone’s throw from the water’s edge. Step out the front door of any of these houses and take a short walk, some 150 yards, to reach the shingle shoreline of Aberfforest Beach. The excellent location here offers a plethora of activities right on your doorstep, so it’s no wonder that many who stay here park up and drop their car keys at the door until they’re ready to depart a week later.

The beach is mostly shingle until low tide when a space of sand is revealed, so time for beach games and sandcastle-building is somewhat limited. That said, you can waste many an hour bathing in the glassy waters on summer evenings and practising your stone skimming. Sit and bask in the peaceful location watching the ebb and flow, many who visit often boast undisturbed serenity as there are few passers-by.

Boaters will want to bear this location in mind for their next boating holiday as you can launch from the slipway here, though a fee does apply. Sail out into Cardigan Bay for sightings of dolphins, porpoises and Atlantic grey seals. The extraordinarily rugged coastline along this stretch of Wales provides a truly epic backdrop for all sea adventures.

Backing the pebbly beach is a region of deciduous woodland, home to a breathtaking waterfall. Step into the canopy of green leaves overhead and remarkable ancient tree trunks to discover a natural beauty spot to rival the very best Pembrokeshire has to offer. Locals say it is easily the best waterfall in the district so make sure not to miss the opportunity to see it in all its glory. Follow the circular walk from the cottages through the woodland past the waterfall along the stream to reach the beach again.

Ramblers keen to spend the week hiking the Coastal Path in their walking boots will delight in a stay at Aberfforest as there is easy access to the famous trail from here. Amble west to tour Dinas Island, a utopia for birdlife including chough, ravens and guillemots. You’ll pass through Cwm Yr Eqlwys and Pwllgwaelod where you’ll likely want to stop off at the small beaches; The Old Sailors pub in Pwllgwaelod is highly recommended for refreshments with a scenic view. Venturing east will bring you out at Newport and the mouth of the River Nevern where you may find kingfishers, swans, otters and oystercatchers.

Holiday Cottages in Aberfforest

The collection of properties at Aberfforest date back around 200 years and were originally a farmhouse and stone barns. Nowadays they are charming holiday cottages, each lovingly converted from their original states. Walk just a few steps to the water from any one of these cottages.

The smallest of the group is Seal Cottage, sleeping just 2 in 1 bedroom. An idyllic stone cottage from the outside, this semi-detached holiday home makes a superb bolthole for couples with an open-plan living space decorated with slate floors, A-frame beams and an exposed stone feature wall. The upstairs bedroom is set in the eaves of the galleried crog loft with skylights allowing you to sleep under the stars. Enjoy snug nights with your partner in front of the wood-burning stove or dine alfresco for breakfast in the sunny enclosed decked area to the rear.

Next door to Seal is Seahorse Cottage, another delightful stone cottage. Somewhat larger in size, Seahorse sleeps up to 6 people in 3 bedrooms and welcomes 1 pet, but manages to retain that same countryside charm its neighbour has. Once again, the open plan living space here is given character with A-frame beams, patches of exposed stone and white-washed walls.

In the kitchen, you’ll find a “Shaker” style kitchen and in the bathroom, underfloor heating. The inviting lounge is centred around the wood burner, just down the hallway from two bedrooms with the third above, a galleried twin room. The enclosed garden is somewhat of a suntrap; enjoy a late morning cuppa whilst the dog stretches their legs before heading out for the day’s adventures.

Across the yard lie two more semi-detached holiday cottages, Crab Cottage and Barnacle Cottage. Both are the same size as Seahorse and sleep up to 6 in 3 bedrooms with 1 dog welcomed in each. Barnacle stands on the left, easily recognisable by its vibrant blue doors, whilst Crab Cottage stands on the right, with its contrasting red door.

Barnacle Cottage consists of an open plan living space with vaulted ceilings, decorated with white-washed walls, neutral tones and many of the original features seen in the other properties. Once the original cowshed, this coastal retreat now houses a cottage-style kitchen and 3 bedrooms, two of which are galleried on the first floor. An interesting feature is a P-shaped bath in the bathroom.

To the front, there is a sheltered paved patio that catches the sun for much of the day; make use of the barbecue provided for easy and delicious feasts before retiring to the enclosed garden behind the property to spend the evening under a blanket of twinkling stars.

Enter Crab Cottage via a stable door and you’ll step right into the open living space with the kitchen, diner and lounge all together in one room. The quality dining table and wood-burning stove are two features that make this a favourite spot for visitors, cosy and spacious enough to fit the whole family. Open tread stairs lead up to two galleried bedrooms in the eaves.

Crab Cottage also benefits from a south-facing patio known to catch the sun and comes complete with both garden furniture and a barbecue. You’ll likely want to dine alfresco for every meal, particularly when spending your summer holidays here.

Hen Ty Llaeth is one of two detached holiday cottages in Aberfforest and is one to recommend for anyone looking for large garden spaces as it boasts an impressive half-acre paddock with a picnic bench. Plus, it has an enclosed raised patio allowing for plenty of memories to be made outside.

Inside, it is the second largest of the collection sleeping up to 7 people in 4 bedrooms. Hen Ty Llaeth offers sea views from most rooms but the best one can be seen from the upstairs lounge with its large gable end window. There is also a conservatory where you can enjoy the sunshine even on those chillier days.

Last but not least is the largest of Aberfforest’s holiday cottages; Aberfforest House. The detached farmhouse is the largest of the group sleeping up to 12 in 6 bedrooms, so it’s likely to become the hub of the holiday if you’re staying here as a group of nearly 40. Recently renovated again in 2015, this house boasts traditional country character with light and airy interiors, original features throughout and a “home from home” atmosphere.

Aberfforest House was made for family gatherings with two sitting rooms, a large range cooker and a fantastic farmhouse dining table spacious enough for hearty Sunday lunches together. Two bedrooms offer wonderful sea views whilst there is also a galleried attic bedroom high up in the house, accessible via a wooden stepladder. The paved terrace and enclosed rear garden are ideal spaces to keep the children and the dogs occupied whilst you prepare dinner or before you make your way down to the beach.
