The Power of Vitamin Sea

It has shaped the Pembrokeshire landscape and is known to improve wellbeing

Fishguard in Pembrokeshire

For centuries now, the sea has had a significant impact on our county. It has not only shaped our land physically but it has influenced and sculpted our communities. Through the decades, it has formed and reformed our communities and changed the way we work, live and play here.

Hundreds of years ago, Pembrokeshire played a momentous part in land defences from sea attacks when the coastal location made the area an easy target to advancing troops. Along the coast, you’ll find fortresses from days gone by and once-magnificent stone castles standing guard. Locals at Fishguard proved particularly noteworthy in the 1797 Last Invasion of Britain when they captured French troops and encouraged the signing of a peace treaty.

When sea travel was the major mode of international transport in the 19th Century, Pembroke Port was home to the Royal Dockyard where sailing ships were built. Other harbours such as Tenby and Porthgain were bustling hives of activity due to import/export activity for the slate, brick, coal, and textile industries.

Fishing villages dot the coastline across Pembrokeshire representing a fraction of the spirited lifestyle which once animated these now sleepy locations. Smaller harbours like Abercastle and Solva still have regular fishermen who trawl these waters and you can taste their catches in many a pub and restaurant along the shores.

Nowadays, our sea has become more of a playground than a work office with recreational activities being the preferred way to make the most of the coast. Many of the boat trips carried out are now sea safaris and coastal cruises, with operators sailing out of St Justinians, Dale and Tenby to reach the offshore islands of Ramsey, Skomer and Caldey respectively.

The beaches are sprinkled with wetsuit-clad families trying surfing for the first time and learning to balance atop a paddleboard. You’ll find kayakers journeying through hidden caves and along calm stretches of saltwater whilst sea swimmers stroke through the shoreline enjoying calming moments.

Soak up the views from any of the endless viewpoints on land for epic views. Channel your creativity through painting, photography or story-writing or enjoy family days by the seaside delving into the rock pools to see what the outgoing tide left behind.

The very best way to make the most of the breath-taking seascape of this western region is to book one of our sea view holidays in Pembrokeshire and enjoy those beautiful scenes from top-class accommodation.
