Pembrokeshire Train Holidays

Explore West Wales by train for a railway adventure to be remembered

Pembroke Castle, easily accessible by rail in Wales

Forget the car for your next holiday; instead, we recommend planning train trips to Pembrokeshire this year and sightseeing some of the most scenic train routes in Wales.

Explore West Wales by rail to check out some of the region’s most exciting gems, including Pembroke Castle, Tenby Harbour and more. Make use of local service buses, coastal shuttle buses and train travel in Pembrokeshire to fully discover the wonders of the area and to reach some of the most beautiful spots in the UK, such as Barafundle Bay, St Davids Cathedral and Newport Parrog.

Stations you can use to explore the Pembrokeshire Coast by train

Pembrokeshire has several train stations across its wild and rugged landscape, so hop aboard for a railway experience and leave your cares at your departure station. Soak up the extraordinary coastal views as you make your way west from the big cities, with huge window panes offering a look at Wales as you’ve perhaps never seen it before.

This full list of railway stations in Pembrokeshire provides a handy overview of where you can travel by train and what you can get up to at each of these destinations. (Listed alphabetically).

Ideas for rail holidays in West Wales

If sustainable travel to Pembrokeshire is all new to you and you’re finding it somewhat overwhelming, fear not. We’ve put together a few travel ideas to help you feel inspired to plan even more car-free holidays in West Wales by train.

Best train stations in Pembrokeshire for coastal access

The top destination for Pembrokeshire train holidays by the coast has to be Tenby, as the train station is located within the centre of the town as are many of our Tenby holiday homes. Pubs, shops and restaurants are right on the doorstep of this quaint resort, making rail holidays in West Wales as easy as can be. All four of Tenby’s beaches are within a short walk of the platform, offering sandy shorelines perfect for watersports, family days out and activity breaks. You can even take a boat trip to Caldey Island during the summer months for a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the town.

Book your ticket to Fishguard for a slower-paced weekend away with evenings spent in traditional pubs and lazy days wandering the pretty harbour. Discover the rich local history of the last invasion of Britain in 1797 and enjoy autumn days walking the dog on Goodwick Sands. Fishguard Harbour train connections are convenient too, with a ferry port located right outside. Enjoy a stay in one of our Fishguard holiday cottages (perhaps a New Year’s break to enjoy Fishguard’s NYE Street Party?) before boarding a Stena Line ship for a quick jaunt to Ireland.

Alternatively, you can escape to one of our Milford Haven holiday cottages for a weekend of food, drink and culture by the marina. Eat your way around the great restaurants of Milford Haven Waterfront, take the family to enjoy rainy days in Pembrokeshire at Phoenix Bowl or book tickets for a live production at the Torch Theatre, which also shows the latest films and blockbusters.

Walking the Pembrokeshire Coast Path by Train Access Points

With a magnificent coast path that amounts to an impressive 186 miles and boasts spectacular sea views, it’s no wonder that this south-western stretch of the Wales Coast Path is a must for many passionate trekkers.

Stop off at Fishguard and Goodwick Station to walk north towards Newport and onto St Dogmaels, or venture south on a journey towards St Davids via Strumble Head Lighthouse and Abereiddy Beach and Blue Lagoon. Alternatively, you could choose Penally Station as your final destination and walk west to pass by Manorbier Castle, Broadhaven South Beach and the epic St Govans Chapel built into the cliff before reaching Dobby’s Grave at Freshwater West Beach.

We’re often asked about our Pembrokeshire rail journey tips for hikers - our best recommendation is to take a look at our wide range of Coast Path cottages. This collection of holiday homes offers cosy cottages right on the trail and within a short walk, so you can tick off a long stretch of your Coast Path to-do list just by staying somewhere halfway through your stretch. You could even book short breaks in different locations to help you minimise the need for shuttle buses while you’re between train station stops.

More sustainable holidays in Wales

With regular local buses and coastal shuttle buses that increase their services during the summer holidays, there’s plenty of scope for rail adventures that cover the whole county, particularly if you pack your bike when you travel to Pembrokeshire by train.

If you’re happy to cycle, you can go wild with two-wheeled escapades from Haverfordwest to Newgale, Broad Haven or Dale. Book your ticket to Kilgetty and pedal to Folly Farm, set out from Manorbier to reach Carew Castle easily or alight at Lamphey and spend the week in Freshwater East or Stackpole, with Bosherston Lily Ponds nearby.
